church was built in 1784 as the first centre of Christian worship in
the New Town of Edinburgh. James Craig's plan for the New Town originally
envisaged a church in St Andrew Square, facing along George Street.
When Sir Laurence Dundas took that site for his mansion, a competition
was held to design a church for the present site, on the north side
of George Street, which was won by Major Andrew Frazer. The church was
built by the City Council to his oval design, and the spire was added
in 1787.

- It 1843, the Disruption
of the Church of Scotland took place in the church when many of the
ministers gathered there for the General Assembly walked out to form
the Church of Scotland free, in protest at infringements of the Church's
right to independence and self-government.

- Originally serving
a residential district, the church now also has a significant ministry
to the business community that surrounds it. In the midst of a busy
city, this church points to God's unconditional love and universal presence.

Communion - a quiet, reflective service, welcoming all Christians to
receive the sacrament.

age worship - includes learning and discussion for all age groups.

Worship - includes music and preaching.

- 1-1.15 pm Monday
to Saturday - meditation, with Holy Communion on Tuesday.
- 6-6.30 pm Wednesday

- The Church is open
Monday to Friday between 12 noon and 3 pm.
- The Undercroft
Cafe is open Monday to Friday between 12 noon and 2 pm, serving a variety
of fare including home made soup, home baking and fairly traded tea
and coffee.

items with all proceeds going to Christian
Aid - thousands of books and many other things. More than £100,000
